Hitch-hiking Laws in the U.S.A., 1973
At the request of the author, Paul DiMaggio, these laws have not been put
on-line. Paul has expressed the genuine concern that, dated and unrepresentative
of present day laws as they are, some naive reader will download them,
print them, abide by them, and end up in legal trouble. It seems to have
become much easier to attract legal problems by hitch-hiking in certain
parts of the United States. While I don't quite share the depth of those
concerns, I do have great respect for the expressed desires of authors
whose work I have collected. As a consequence I present here only the skeleton
of the full page which I can provide to any researcher on request.
If someone were to take up my offer to compile an exhaustive list of
current laws, then I would be happy to publish them here, and Paul would
probably have no objection to publishing these dated laws beside them for
purposes of comparison. The evolution of laws regarding hitch-hiking strongly
interests me.
What follows is the skeleton of the Laws page I had planned to place
here:
In 1973 Paul DiMaggio published the most comprehensive list of laws
relating to hitch-hiking that I've come across. It sheds some light on
what was in fact illegal and what was not, and how legislation was drafted.
Paul DiMaggio's list of laws is reproduced here, though the reader should
take careful note that these are not current
laws, but laws of 1973. I would welcome any effort to compile a comparable
list of current laws, which would shed some interesting light upon the
evolution of hitch-hiking legislature over a period of several decades.
