Books on Hitch-hiking

What follows is a list of useful books on hitch-hiking. Some are in print, some are not, I have seen some and only have references to others. I am always trying to track down copies of the real thing for review here (a hint to anyone who has one on offer, including publishers). I have tried to cite enough information to find the book, in a consistent format. Unfortunately not all the information I'd like is available to me, and I've neglected to not the place of publication as well alas. I wish I could work out the proper format for citing an ISBN number if such a thing exists, everyone seems to adhere to there own norm.

Note: Since compiling this list, my library of hitch-hiking books has grown so large I've not found time to keep this list up to date. One day it will be updated, or a decent bibliography published. In the mean time, this list serves historical purposes only (reflects some of the books I was tracing in 1997).

Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe

This looks to be a fairly good book from the ad on the web. Alas Daan only has it publish in the Netherlands as fgar as I know, he's having trouble tracking down an English language publisher.

      Hitch-hikers Guide to Europe
      Daan Toner
      1996
      Kosmos Z&K
      ISBN 90-215-2818-5

Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe

Another book by the same name. An interesting book to read, full of anecdotes and advice, but in the end more of a travel guide than a hitcher's manual. Sections on where to stay, where to eat, what to see and so on, coupled with loads of advice on hitching make the book rather unattractive to carry around to me. Though I've not seen a physical copy, Daan Toner's book, looks, from the ads, to be much more condensed and carry much more relevant information for the hitcher. Still Ken Welsh has become something of a legend, oft quoted as result of this long running book of his.

      Katie Wood and Ken Welsh
      1996
      Harper Collins Publishers
      ISBN 0 00 638691 1

EUROPE: A Manual for Hitch-hikers

A nice and fairly short book which concentrates on where to stand to get out of town, where to change cars and so on. The more practical side to hitching, and small enough to possibly warrant carrying around. A little out of date alas, which is sad given the enormous changes to have swept Europe since the last edition was published.

      EUROPE: A Manual for Hitch-hikers
      Simon Calder
      1985
      Vacation Work Publications
      ISBN 0 907638 287

Hitch-Hikers' Manual - Britain

I've only heard of this book, not seen it. I expect it also is by Simon Calder, with a similar format but more detail on Britain.

The Hitchhiker's Manual

Here's what I read about it. I've not seen a copy:

"Hitchhiking is a North American institution - and this book, written in the vernacular and style of the street, explains how to do it correctly and efficiently. You'll learn secrets of the road that will help you hitch free rides and get safely to your destination: how to dress, what to carry, where and how to position yourself and how to generate repeat rides. Also included are tips on emergency sleeping resources, practical sign making, avoiding trouble with the cops, and much more."

It sounds like a pretty run of the mill book to me quite frankly.

The Hitchhiker's Field Manual

An excellent book on hitch-hiking through the States. Alas the last edition I saw dated back to 1973, which makes it a little less than useful.

Africa for the Hitchhiker

I found an old copy of this in the Australian National Library, but alas didn't find time to examine it too closely. I did notice that it has some interesting information on crossing the Sahara though.

Asia for the Hitchhiker

A red herring to the first degree. A nice litle pocket sized travel guide in its day, this has really nix to do with hitch-hiking. Uses the word in the loosest of rhetorical senses in the the title, that's all. Worth mentioning for that reason alone (that is, so you don't waste too much time trying to find another copy!)

The Seagoing Hitchhiker's Handbook

An excellent book for seagoing hitchhikers. It is full of information concerning where to find yachts, where they go, when and how to go about convincing the captain he should take you along ...

The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Oceans: Crewing Around the World

A slightly older book on hitching the oceans. It has some very useful maps and seasonal information in it, along with much general advice on how make yourself attractive as a (working) passenger to yachting captains.

Hitching: Tales from the Byways and Superhighways

Not actually a useful book in any way shape or form, just a pile of interesting stories from hitchhikers, myself among them. A cheap plug on my part ;-)

Hitching: Tales from the Byways and Superhighways
      Kirsty Brooks

      Wakefield Press

Hitch-hiking

This has to be the very best piece of research into hitch-hiking that I've every come across. I found a copy in the Australian National Library, and was lucky enough to track the author down, whose granted me permission to republish it on the web! It is there in all its original glory. Which is a good thing, because it is not an easy book to find!
